2011 December

Oh yeah, there were some distance races in Rogla on Saturday too, huh? Once again, this will be short on the words; just some pretty pictures. The US women had another strong outing: Once again I’d note the continued downward trends for Holly and Kikkan and the generally flat trend for Liz. (Ida still has [...] Related posts:

Skiing in the Valley This morning David Sinclair and I did a power workout on snow thanks to the Sugarbush Resort.  We were able to ski around the base area of Mt. Ellen and we pushed ourselves to the top of the new GMVS Poma three times.&nbs...

Dear winter,I miss you. Please come back.Love,NateSince the snow is not cooperating this year (dang did we get spoiled last year!), and all the races for citizen racers were cancelled, I figured that we needed to take things into our own hands and orga...

After completing the second weekend of NorAm Cup series in Canada, some of Sunday’s top racers talked about their start to the season and what they’re looking forward to in the new year. From Rossland, British Columbia, where the Black Jack Ski Club hosted two days of freestyle events with sprints on Saturday and a 10/15 k mass start on Sunday.

Saturday December 17 was the Free Technique Sprint – Besh Cup #1 race at Anchorage’s Kincaid Park.  Temperatures right at the freezing mark and recent wet snow made for fast conditions. The excitement built among the spectators in the Mens’ first semi-final heat as David Norris of the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks (NSCF) tucked low and passed the field coming down the small hill over the tunnel at the south end of the stadium. ...

Youth Olympic Games Presents: Matt Saurette

With only one boy and one girl representing each country in cross-country skiing at the upcoming Youth Olympic Games, it can be tough to decide which single individual deserves that opportunity. Nobody’s consistently dominant all the time, right? In Canada, however, the decision of which boy to send was easy: Matt Saurette had been the age-group national champion for two years running. The 16-year-old, who grew up in Edmonton, Alberta and lists Alex Harvey as...

Toko: Applying a HF Blue/XCold Mix

Applying an HF Blue/XCold Mix XCold Powder has earned its way to being one of the absolute most popular waxes on the racing circuit.  Its main purpose is to make the skis slide faster when the snow is cold and slow.  If conditions are cold and fast, leave it out.  The video below demonstrates how to mix HF Blue and XCold Powder, a very common and successful combination. Transition to First Snow and Classic Technique...

So I am finally getting recovered from a weak of racing. It is now time for the holiday break and I couldn't be more excited with my results for the first period of competitions. With not the best jumping this last week, I proved you don't you don't have to jump amazing to get podiums. I am very happy with my form in the cross [...]

Kris Dobie photo.Due to the amazing work of the Craftsbury community we were able to get the Eastern Cup Season off and running.  Alum and current GMVS mentor, Tim Reynolds stole the show and led an impressive crew of current and alum skiers with ...

This weekend’s World Cup Nordic Combined competition featured three days of racing in Seefeld, Austria—the resurrection of the Team Sprint event on Friday, and a HS 109/Gundersen 10 k each on Saturday and Sunday. France came away with the most dominant overall performance of the weekend—or rather, Jason Lamy Chappuis did. He teamed up with Sebatien Lacroix to win the team sprint, and then nabbed the top result in both individual competitions. The U.S. put...

UPDATED – Notes and Quotes from the Hochfilzen IBU World Cup Weekend

Biathletes on the IBU World Cup circuit hit up Hochfilzen, Austria for the second straight weekend after poor snow conditions in France forced the cancellation of a scheduled weekend there. While doubling up in Hochfilzen wasn’t too exciting, U.S. biathlete Lowell Bailey said that it wasn’t as bad as he’d expected, either. “The second week of racing here in Hochfilzen turned out to be quite a bit different than the first even though we were...

Snow-wise, the 2011-2012 season hasn’t gotten off to the best start. Just four weeks into the World Cup, low snow has caused nearly every European host to scramble to put together a man-made course, shorten (at least initially) its distance races, or give up and move to another venue entirely. Domestically, competitors for the approaching U.S. Nationals are looking at a week of racing on a man-made loop in Rumford, ME for the second year...

Heat Times I’ve been otherwise occupied, so I didn’t follow the racing action too closely this weekend. But for you own edification, here are how the heat time shook out among the men’s finalists: Some of the outlying times were cut off, obviously. Note the general increase in speed in the quarters, and then folks [...] Related posts:

Sandau Keeps NorAm Streak Going

ROSSLAND, British Columbia — It’s not that Kevin Sandau’s not a team player. He just puts the pedal down when he feels like it. One of four Alberta World Cup Academy skiers seeded in the top eight of Sunday’s NorAm 15 k freestyle mass start, Sandau pushed the pace early as he tried to break free of the 73-man field. It didn’t exactly work at first, but the man in the green leader’s jersey kept...

It is wonderful to be home for the holidays.  The skiing is great, the weather is beautiful and my friends are around to go skiing.  Unfortunately I spent the first half of the week sitting in bed allowing my body to rest and beat the cold I picked up traveling home from the races in Canada. [...]
