The 40th annual American Birkebeiner began like any prior Birkie for Madshus sales representative Ben Dubay, spending the OO demo days on the Birkie trail, prepping and loaning the latest gear for curious spectators and anxious participants to test and compare. During the demo Jesse Crandall, a native Wisconsin NCAA ski veteran and seasoned Nordic coach, dropped by to see what Madshus had to offer. Impressed with their latest skis, boots, and poles Jesse borrowed a Madshus setup to demo and came back impressed. In fact, Jesse liked the equipment so much that he asked if it was possible for Madshus to lend some equipment to himself and Shawn Cheshire, a blind athlete Jesse had been guiding and coaching as she worked to be selected for the US Paralympic Team in Cross Country Skiing and Biathlon was whom Jesse was going to lead on her first Birkie. Happy to lend some gear and struck by Jesse’s request, Ben quickly agreed.

Gear West is excited to have received a shipment of Fischer Speedmax skate skis. Fischer’s new Cold Base Bonding technology equates to faster skis. By avoiding heat and pressure when the base is added the base material retains a high level of wax absorption. Better wax absorption equates to faster skis. Three Gear West ski experts: Matt Liebsch, Jan Guenther and Josh Doebbert share their thoughts regarding the Fischer Speedmax.

The kick wax tip for the first few classic waves was Nordic Gripwax Red with a light covering of Nordic Gripwax Blue (obviously over a sanded ski with Basewax Green on it). What I was recommending to people that I talked with who visited me at New Moon Ski Shop was to arrive at the start area with just the Red on. Test the Red in a very well skied in track and then if it were dragging or icing, cover it lightly with Blue. This was the way to go.

Bjorn Daehlie North America proudly announces that effective today, they are the distributor for Rode ski wax for the US market. Rode will be on-site at the American Birkebeiner this week providing wax recommendations for all Birkie skiers looking to find their winning wax. Waxes and tools will be available for purchase at the Bjorn Daehlie/Rode booth at the Birkie expo Thursday and Friday, as well as at many of the leading nordic retailers throughout the country.

Which is best for you? The Fischer S-Track has very soft tips and tails. Peak pressure/contract pressure is closer to the foot which aids in flotation and gives easy static release and easy climbing. Fischer chooses NIS plates for all S-Track skis but we can mount SNS or NNN. The S-Track comes with Fischer's standard 28 Plus base. The Atomic Featherlite features a longer wheelbase which gives great ski feel and stability in firm and medium track. Coupled with a race wedge the Atomic climbs with ease. Both skis are extremely light but the Atomic gets the slight nod in the weight category. The bases on both skis are very slippery and production grind finish quality is better than ever... Fischer is running Mantec machines and Atomic chooses Wintersteiger.
