Exemption For Filbrich German skier Jens Filbrich has received dispensation from The International Skifederation (FIS) to race with his high hemoglobinvalue. Source: Skidsport.com German skier Jens Filbrich was denied a start right during the Kuusamo World Cup races earlier this season. The reason was that his hemoglobinvalue exceeded the legal value of 175 for men. He has now received permission from FIS to race with higher values. The FIS committee agreed that Filbrich’s values are...

Nome, Alaska may not seem the most obvious place to spend New Years. However, it had one of the best community firework displays I’ve seen in a while, and at less than 150 miles from the dateline was one of the last places you have a chance to catch the New Year. It also had some of the most fun skate skiing I’ve had since crust skiing last spring. Although locals were complaining of the...

Skiers go into the weight room to turn strength into power, and as the big races approach, to turn this into ski specific power. With the New Year here the racing season is very much underway for most skiers. For those with Olympic aspirations, many athletes are getting more ski specific with their strength and power building, both in the weight room, and on snow. Andrew Newell V2ing uphill en route to a fast prologue...

The Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks believes in the adage: Think Globally, Act Locally. To that end, more than 90 members of the Nordic Ski Club, including skiers from 68 years old down to elementary age, fought the rampant obesity that plagues our society by attempting, and in most cases succeeding, to ski their ages in kilometers on the Jim Whisenhant Ski Trails at Birch Hill in Fairbanks on the day after Christmas. It’s a...

The US National championship at Soldier Hollow, Utah starts on January 3. The first race is the 15/30-kilometer freestyle. We ran into a number of the contenders training at Soldier Hollow in the morning of December 24 and asked them what type of training they were doing today. The conditions were perfect with fast hard packed course snow, rock solid classic tracks, 28-30 Fahrenheit, sunshine and no wind. Carl Swenson, US Ski Team (Two twelfth...

Much of the science in endurance sports begins with intricate testing to benchmark athletes in an effort to help develop physiologic and biomechanical methods to tweak performance. Dr. Sue Beaudet, a professor at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, recently spent a sabbatical at the Vuokatti Sport Institute in Finland. Vuokatti was chosen because of its specialization in the study of cross-country skiing and biathlon at a world-class level. While in Finland, Dr. Beaudet...

For new readers (and reminder for the old ones): Reprint of a popular December 2004 training and race preparation article. In an article called Get Ready For Racing With A Time-Trial Or Pace Workout posted on November 10th I discussed some physiological advantages from doing time-trials and pace workouts. Here are some technical benefits from doing this type of training. To view the Get Ready For Racing With A Time-Trial Or Pace Workout article go...

On Sunday in Kuusamo, Finland, Germany's Jens Filbrich was prevented from racing the men's 15km free technique race after a pre-race blood test determined that his hemoglobin level was too high. He was suspended by FIS for five days. Filbrich's hemoglobin level was 17 g/dL, which is the limit authorized by FIS. An elevated hemoglobin level can be an indicator of banned blood-enhancing substances, such as EPO. Filbrich said the abnormal reading was because he...

Hi all – We had a great weekend of skiing here – both skate and classic skiing were terrific. The attached photo was taken at about 1:00PM, Sunday, November 13. If the snow does continue, Doug Edgerton will shift to grooming with his big cat...

Swede Anders Sodergren has had a successful training season this year. He has trained well and been free of injuries and sickness. If that continues, he’ll be one of Sweden’s biggest medal hopes in the Turin Olympics in February. Source: Skidsport.com/Glid – I felt very good at the end of the last altitude camp in Val Senales, Italy, especially in the distance workouts. I struggled a little at the beginning, says Anders Sodergren He is...

The ground was covered by a little newfallen snow which made it slippery and I stumbled on a tree root and fell, explain Kjolstad. – The x-ray showed that the bone was crushed. The finger was actually one centimeter shorter than normal. They pulled it back before they put...

Bob Hamel, of the Cambridge Sports Union nordic ski club (Boston, MA-area based, CSU), has been working in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean. (Get out your map and look south and west. Way way way south-west). We can only assume that these photos are being released because Hamel has found yet another, even more successful training secret for his Club members, one that will allow them to win the NENSA Club series for...

Skiing at Sunshine! The pictures below provide a pretty good idea of what kind of treasure was found by some at Sunshine Ski Village in Banff, Alberta on Saturday October 22. Arrangements were made for a group of Canmore based skiers to get in some early season skiing on a beautiful and crisp morning in the Rockies. Members of Rocky Mountain Racers, Exel Racing Team, X-C.Com and XC Ottawa as well as a few others...

Brian Erickson, one of the coaches of the Alaska Winter Stars ski program in Anchorage, Alaska sent us these pictures of early season skiing at Hatcher Pass. Last weekend brought the first real good skiing to Southcentral Alaska.
