Garrott Kuzzy

The past couple of days have been a blur.  It’s been overwhelming, and thrilling, to receive so much attention from friends, coaches, teachers, professors, fans, and even people I’ve never met.  Some highlights include inquiries as to when I’ll be getting an Olympic rings tattoo (never), a poem from Gus Kaeding (not appropriate for mass [...]

Canmore.  And after that, Vancouver!  Pretty fired up right now.  Nice to find out a little earlier than anticipated.  Not much to say, except a big “Thanks!” to everyone who’s helped along the way. . .my family, teammates, coaches, friends, sponsors, and fans.  Your generous support and positive influence has helped make my Olympic dream [...]

Located in a nondescript  warehouse building in downtown Salt Lake is The Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective.  The Collective is a bike recycling program that takes in used bikes and components, then refurbishes them to donate or sell to people in need of transportation in Salt Lake.  This year, The Collective is already ahead of it’s [...]

No parents, no rules!  I had the opportunity to race my first ever Western Collegiate race at Soldier Hollow this morning.  Racing is fun, especially mass start races.  Today was a 20km mass start skate that was everything you could expect it to be, with pack tactics, break-aways, and enthusiastic cheering sections on the steep [...]

No, not that Adams Family.  The Utah Adams.  They’re my hosts during my time here in Park City and I couldn’t have asked for a better family to stay with during the training camp.  Luke and Lindsey both ski for the local junior club in Park City and Greg and Toni get out practically everyday [...]

That’s Utah’s claim. . .and this morning, it would be hard to argue.  Northern Michigan gets some deep lake effect snow off of Lake Superior.  The Wasatch Mountains in Utah get their lake effect off the Great Salt Lake.  When the system hits the range, it dumps powder across the Wasatch and make for some [...]

The initial US Olympic Cross Country team was announced this morning.  The final team will be announced, according to USSA, on January 29.  This will be done after the final reallocation of start spots awarded to each nation by FIS.  You can read more about this at fasterskier.com. I’ve been more concerned about getting myself in [...]

If dogs dream in black & white, I dream in corduroy.  Another picture perfect day at Soldier Hollow. Not much to report today.  Simply a perfect morning for a 3 hour distance ski. Here are some other links worth checking out: My shop, New Moon Ski & Bike,  just unveiled a new website today.  They can hook you up [...]

It’s Friday night in Park City. What do we do after skiing all week? Go out and watch other people ski. Last night, Deer Valley hosted a FIS Aerials World Cup under the lights. The whole Nordic crew in Park City got together to support our teammates on the Aerials team. Not [...]

One of the big perks to training in Park City and being a National Team member is having access to USSA’s new training facility, the Center of Excellence.  The C.O.E., as it is known out here, is less than a year old and houses all of USSA’s sports administration and training facilities under one roof. This [...]

Spent what felt like the majority of today at White Pine Touring Center in Park City.  Went for a relaxed training ski in the morning, then joined the Park City Junior Nordic Team for their practice in the afternoon.  White Pine has some of the best golf course skiing I’ve ever done. I ran into a [...]

The Film Festival isn’t until next week, but that didn’t stop Matt Whitcomb, Liz Stephen and I from heading over to Robert Redford’s “ranch” for a morning of skiing.  We celebrated Liz’s birthday and skied for a few hours on the 12km of trails at Sundance. Happy Birthday, Liz!

I was at home in Minneapolis long enough to do my laundry and repack my bags, before heading back to the airport and flying to Salt Lake City for an altitude training camp in Park City. What did I do with my 24 hours at home? After two weeks living in a hotel room with only cereal [...]

We’re flying out of Anchorage and back to Minneapolis today.  One of the coolest things about Anchorage is how well everyone seems to adapt to the conditions, both cold and darkness.  All week I was surprised to see cyclists commuting through town at all times of day.  I ran into Paul (pictured) originally from Madison, [...]

Just wrapped up the 2010 Nationals in Anchorage.  It’s been a bittersweet week of racing and today was no exception.  I ended up qualifying first in the classic sprint, which is the first time I’ve ever qualified first at Nationals (after 3 consecutive 2nds).  I’d been considering double-poling the course on skate skis, but in [...]

Kuzzy Kicks to Qualifier win, Hinckley Second, Cook Third

After a disappointing first two races here at Nationals, Garrott Kuzzy scratched from the classic distance event on Wednesday to prepare for today’s classic sprint. It’s looking like that was a pretty good idea. In the qualifier this morning, Kuzzy topped the men’s field by almost two seconds, besting a pair of top domestic sprinters Mike Hinckley and Chris Cook, who were 1.73 and 2.31 seconds down, respectively. Using his lanky technique to stride all...

The forecast for today was 28 degrees and partly cloudy.  It wouldn’t be a 30km Classic at Nationals without some more variables thrown into the mix.  Sure enough, when we woke up this morning, there were big dollar flakes accumulating in a hurry.  Of course, coach Bryan Fish and his wax crew of Igor Badamshin, [...]

No, not the NCAA football National Championship–the Nordic Ski Nationals in Anchorage, Alaska.  The first race is in the books with my former Middlebury teammate Simi Hamilton taking the men’s sprint title.  Kikkan Randall won the women’s, with CXC skier Rebecca Dussault taking second.  I ended up qualifying second in the sprint for the third consecutive [...]

Hamilton Takes Freestyle Sprint Title in Anchorage

After four years in college, Simi Hamilton isn’t supposed to know how to sprint. Try telling that to Mike Hinckley. With 500 meters to go in the freestyle sprint at Kincaid Park in Anchorage, Hinckley made a huge move on the field, passing Hamilton on the outside of the last significant hill on the course. After finishing second last year, it looked like Hinckley had this one in the bag. But on the ensuing downhill,...
