Andre Watt, Adam Swank, Nikolai Anikin, and non-racing friend Jason Wall have completed our month long bike trip around Europe. It was a great trip. Road biking around Europe is the best. You have a virtually unlimited selection of bike friendly roads to choose from. You can climb all the mountains you want on low traffic roads. The cars don't drive very fast and are considerate of bikers. Additionally, all the cars are tiny. They...

Kristine Vandbakk made the Norwegian junior national team when another skier pulled out and gave up her spot. But too much training ended with a bang, says the 19-year old. Kristine Vandbakk (19) had made a training plan as a “outside the junior national team” skier. But she didn’t reduce anything on her own plan when she suddenly made the junior national team when Ida Gjermundshaug Pedersen (daughter of Hilde GP) gave up her spot...

Athletes, at any level, find joy in their sport. Ultimately, our enjoyment of the sport motivates our involvement. Any skier can tell of the wonder of skimming across a well-groomed ski trail or the enchantment of experiencing a snow covered landscape on skis. The workouts and skis when we lack the wonder and the enchantment tend to be ignored and forgotten as quickly as possible. Experiencing a full range of emotions in all aspects of...

On snow skiing and volume is the main focus for the Norwegian team’s Ramsau, Austria training camp. But Jens Arne Svartedal is warning about pushing too hard. The Norwegian sprint and distance teams arrived Ramsau before last weekend, while the women’s team arrived on Monday August 28. The nationalteam skiers have not been on snow since early June, so on-snow skiing is the main focus at the seven day long camp. Curious about the conditions...

Norwegian junior national team coaches Age Skinnstad and Fredrik Aukland were impressed by the fastest skiers in a recent rollerski time-trial at an open junior national team camp, but suggest that many need to train more V1 on rollerskis. “I’m impressed by the top skiers in today’s time-trial. Øystein Pettersen and Kurland Olsen tied for first in the boy’s race. Johaug skied very fast in the girl’s race and won by more than 40 seconds,”...

I am not sure whether to be impressed or disgusted. I am watching Brian Gregg double poling on the rollerboard and one of his back muscles is distracting me from my calf raises. “Look at that muscle,” I say to my fellow CXC teammate Garrott Kuzzy as my pointing finger tries to keep up with the offending muscle while Brian whooshes up and down the rollerboard. “Watch when he does dips,” responds Garrott carelessly before...

Marit Bjœrgen and Stig Roar Kveen won the 24 kilometer long rollerski race from Stœren to Budal for the third year in a row. Both set course records. Krister Trondsen was leading up to the 4-k mark, while Rune Muller took the lead after that. Kveen had lost a wheel right before the 4-k point, but quickly got a new ski. He then passed Frode Estil and Trondsen before he chased down Muller and passed...

These are the phrases U.S. Ski Team athletes and coaches have bandied about in New Zealand. Now with the three-week camp coming to a close, the team is encouraged by the progress. “Back in May, pretty much across the board, our skiers were still in need of consolidating their aerobic base,” said USST national team...
